Privacy & cookie policy

What Rated to Watch stores, what our advertising partner stores, and how to say no to either.

Last updated 2 September 2026

The short version

Rated to Watch has no accounts, no newsletter, and no comment section, so there is nothing here for you to sign up to and nothing for us to hold. We do not ask for your name or your email address, and we do not sell data. The site is funded by advertising, and advertising is the one place where third-party cookies come into it — with your agreement, and reversible at any time.

What we store on your device

One item, and only after you answer the consent banner: a local storage entry recording whether you agreed to personalised advertising. It contains the word “granted” or “denied” and nothing else — no identifier, no timestamp, nothing that could distinguish you from anybody else who pressed the same button. You can clear it from your browser at any time, or press “Ad choices” in the footer to be asked again.

Your choice of platform tab, category, and any text you type into the chart filter stay in the page while you read and are gone when you close it. None of it is sent to us.

Advertising, Google, and cookies

Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet.

Where the law requires it, we ask before any of that happens. Until you agree, and permanently if you decline, this site instructs Google to serve non-personalised advertising only: ads chosen from the content of the page rather than from anything about you, with no advertising profile read or written. Non-personalised ads may still use a limited cookie for frequency capping, aggregate reporting, and fraud prevention.

You can opt out of personalised advertising by Google at adssettings.google.com, and out of third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info or, in Europe, youronlinechoices.eu. Google’s own description of how it handles data from sites that use its services is published at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Server logs

The site is hosted on Netlify, which records ordinary request logs — IP address, user agent, the page requested, and the time — for security and to keep the service running. We do not combine those logs with anything else, do not use them to build profiles, and do not run any separate analytics product on this site.

Where the content comes from

Loading a chart page also loads cover art and text that Rated to Watch has already collected from English Wikipedia and TVmaze and cached on our own infrastructure. Images are served through Netlify’s image service. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which receives the request for the font files as part of serving them. No part of this requires you to be identified.

Your rights

If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, the GDPR gives you the right to access, correct, or erase personal data held about you, to object to processing, and to withdraw consent at any time — for advertising consent, by pressing “Ad choices” in the footer and declining. Because we hold no accounts and no contact details, in practice there is rarely anything for us to retrieve or delete; requests about advertising data held by Google should be made to Google, which is the controller of that data.

If you are a California resident, the CCPA gives you the right to know what personal information is collected and to opt out of its “sale”. Rated to Watch does not sell personal information. Declining the consent banner opts you out of personalised advertising here.

Children

Rated to Watch is a general-audience site about film and television and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children, and we do not request child-directed ad treatment because the site is not written for that audience.

Changes and contact

If this policy changes we will change the date at the top of the page. Material changes to how advertising works here will also reset the consent banner, so you get asked again rather than opted in silently.

A contact address for privacy requests is published here once the site’s operator sets one for this deploy.
