The desk on Netflix

Netflix is the only one of the three that shows its homework, and it shows a service that lives on volume. A thriller with a simple hook and a Christmas setting will out-watch a prestige drama by a factor of five, and the non-English lists routinely produce the week’s biggest number without ever reaching an English-language conversation. Read the top of this chart as a measure of reach, not of quality.

Desperate contestants gamble their lives for prize money in twisted childhood games.

Squid Game is a South Korean dystopian survival thriller drama television series created, written, and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk for Netflix. The series depicts a secret contest where 456 players, all of whom are in deep financial hardship, risk their lives to play a series of children's games that result in death if eliminated, for the chance to win a ₩45.6 billion (US$39.86 million) prize. The series' title draws from ojingeo ("squid"), a Korean children's game. Lee Jung-jae, who portrays series protagonist Seong Gi-hun, leads an ensemble cast.
